Weekly Reflection from Pastor Kevin 10/9/24

Dear SCC & Friends,

Let marriage be held in honor… ~Hebrews 13:4

Reflection #240

Dudley and I recently celebrated fifty-two years of marriage. We have shared twenty-seven million, three hundred thirty-one thousand and two hundred minutes as husband and wife. We’ve been married twice as long as when we were single… How is it that time seems to go much faster as we grow older? Tempus fugit… It is in the midst of time that life simply happens. Our marriages are an accumulation of good times and bad times, richness and poorness, sickness and health, to be lived out until “death do us part.” None of us have it all together, but all can recognize that marriage is a state and a process requiring grace and love. Your worst days are never so bad that they are beyond the reach of God’s grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God’s grace. ~Jerry Bridges~ The two shall become one… a merging process where love and commitment forge a marriage.

Marriage by its very nature is designed to bring unity out of diversity. Dudley and I marvel at how different we are in so many areas while at the same time sharing common bonds of faith and family. It’s two imperfect people who won’t give up on each other. It starts by making a promise, a pledge, a covenant. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. ~1 Cor. 13:7 A marriage endures because of a promise kept… forsaking all others… by loving, honoring and cherishing our spouse. A happy marriage is a union of two good forgivers. ~Ruth Graham Bell~ We have friends married less than one year and others over sixty years… For all of us, it’s learning to love and respect each other one day at a time. Fifty-two years later, our wonderful marriage remains a work in progress… Thank you Lord for your grace on all of our marriages… Let marriage be held in honor among all… ~Heb. 13:4 Keep up the good work!

Made for these days,

Kevin
