Weekly Reflection from Pastor Kevin 11/8/23

Dear SCC & Friends,

…honor to whom honor… ~Romans 12:7

Reflection #192

True honor is an outflow of a grateful heart and something we can do. Honor. It sounds a bit quaint in today’s vernacular. A gentleman’s honor. A lady’s honor. To honor thy mother and father. The Honorable Judge so-and-so. But for thousands of years, honor has had meaning. It has had value. It was—and still is—considered paramount to who you are. Do you honor your family by being a man or woman of virtue? Do you honor your country by serving in times of need? Do you honor your faith by being pious and reverent? ~Admiral William H. McRaven, The Wisdom of the Bullfrog~ Indeed, we see the preeminence of honor at the close of the Declaration of Independence – …with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honorNo person was ever honored for what he received, but rather for what he gave. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor… ~Rom. 12:10 ~Selah~

Render honor to whom honor is due. ~Rom. 13:7 At this time of the year, the United States honors its veterans with a special day of esteem and respect. Veteran’s Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of WWI. Congress passed a resolution in 1926, making it an annual observance, and it became a national holiday in 1938. Then, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veteran’s Day to all those who served the country in war and peace. A nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure. ~Abraham Lincoln~ We gather our focus to recognize the millions of veterans who have gone before us and served honorably on our behalf… We honor their service and the posterity they have rendered to our nation… Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. ~Ps. 33:12 … Freedom is never free… Keep up the good work!

With honor and gratitude,

Kevin
