Weekly Reflection from Pastor Kevin 5/22/24

Dear SCC & Friends,

Remember the former days… ~Isaiah 46:9

Reflection #220

Without memory there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future. ~Elie Wiesel~ Our call to honor and remember is evident throughout Scripture. We are to render honor to whom honor is due. Two years ago, my brother was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. It was about a quarter of mile walk from the chapel to the graveside. Our family walked slowly behind the horse-drawn caisson and honor guard. As we made our way, I noticed several groups of tourists on the hillside. As we passed, they took off their hats, stopped talking and put their hands over their hearts. Their honor and respect deeply blessed me and reminded me of my brother and why he served. Nearly all of us know or have known someone who “served in harm’s way…” Those who risked life and limb to uphold the ideals of freedom, faith and family. …for we have regard for what is honorable, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. ~2 Cor. 8:21

Remembrance is good for the soul and serves as a conduit to thanksgiving. This Memorial Day let us honor and express our deep gratitude for those who have gone before us. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ~Edmund Burke Where do we get good soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen? They are right next door. You coached them in soccer and Little League. You taught them in Jr. High and High School, they went to our churches… They’re simply Americans who defended our nation in time of need… Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. ~Jn. 15:13 We owe them a debt that cannot be repaid. We can only remember… and in that remembrance, may we be ever grateful for their sacrifice and the posterity we now enjoy…. Freedom is not free. Memorial Day brings to remembrance freedom’s price and the ever-present need for vigilance. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord! ~Ps. 33:12 Keep up the good work!

Let us remember,

Kevin
