Dear SCC & Friends,
The one who states his case first seems right, until another comes and examines him. ~Proverbs 18:17
Update #85
It is very easy to overreact, especially in the growing polarization of present-day culture. Scripture challenges us… This you know, my beloved brethren… But let every one be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger… ~James 1:19 We are all susceptible to something called “confirmation bias” …the tendency to receive and interpret new information as validation of our pre-existing beliefs. Bias may be defined as a prejudice in favor of or against, and at times can cloud sound judgment and understanding. Not all bias is wrong, but it should be tethered to the Lord and His ways. Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the motives. ~Prov. 21:2 I confess I have a heartfelt bias for our Lord, His Word, His Kingdom and all that glorifies His Name. Conversely, a self-determined bias surrounding the issues of life can make us defensive, argumentative, judgmental and generally unpleasant. A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in airing his opinions. ~Prov. 18:2 …Selah…
Years ago, I was leading a Bible study in Virginia. It was a great group of young people and one of the girls was engaged to be married. She sent out wedding invitations to everyone in the group except to one girl. When she heard about it, she was deeply hurt having received no invitation. Her hurt quickly migrated to anger and resentment. She came to Dudley and me for counsel… “How could she do this to me? I thought we were close friends.” That week, “her friend” met with her and said, “Carmen, I mailed out the invitations to everyone else, but you mean so much to me I wanted to hand it to you personally.” Needless to say, the reality of her misconception was both humbling and eye-opening. What a challenge… slow to speak… quick to hear… and slow to anger. …he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. ~Prov. 17:27. We were made for these days… Keep up the good work!
Yours in His grace,
Kevin
